What Extra Costs Are Associated with Building a Pool?

Especially as summer rolls around again, you may be considering building a pool. Pools keep you cool from the heat and humidity and make summer days far more bearable. However, as people consider the cost of building a pool, many forget to calculate the extra costs that may come with their purchase. While the pool itself may have a flat price, you should factor these extra costs into your decision as you look into pools in Atlanta.

As-Built Survey

Depending on the requirements in your specific city or county, you may need to purchase an as-built land survey before starting your pool. A land surveyor determines the exact lay of your land and the points of your property lines. A survey ensures that you don't build onto your neighbors' land, and it allows you to know with certainty whether you have any land irregularities that may interfere with your pool design. Surveys generally range from around $300 to $400, depending on the area, though they may cost as little as $75 or as much as $900.

Drainage

While your pool builders in Atlanta can provide more specific estimates for the cost of draining your pool, the cost to have the pool drained, cleaned, acid-washed, and refilled generally comes to about $150 to $800 dollars. Drainage costs vary based on the size of the pool and the state of the filtering system. While private pools do not generally need to be drained before they are cleaned, since chemical treatments can address many water quality problems, in order to truly remove all of the dissolved solids that build up in the water, you'll need to drain the pool.

Fencing

To ensure that neither your own children nor neighboring children slip into your pool, it's important that you add a pool fence either directly around the pool or, at minimum, around your backyard. Many states have legal requirements for securing a pool to prevent accidents, and pool companies in Atlanta can likely advise you on whether fences are required in your area. The average cost for a pool fence is between $1,500 and $2,500, depending on the size and materials of the fence.

Maintenance

Since an outdoor pool is exposed to the elements 24/7, it requires regular, year-round maintenance. First, you need to regularly skim the surface and bottom of your pool for fallen debris, which requires a pool net or other cleaning tools. You also need to ensure that the water quality of your pool is safe by regularly checking the pool's pH balance and applying necessary chemicals, such as granular acid or sodium hypochlorite, to keep it in check. Similarly, you'll need additional chemicals to control for algae, bacteria, and other harmful growths in the pool water. Experts suggest that you can expect to pay a minimum of $78 a month to maintain the filtration system of the pool and to clean debris from the surface.
