Five Ways to Build the Perfect Pool

Imagine looking out the window to your backyard and seeing a beautiful swimming pool with sparkling blue water, surrounded by a lush landscape and natural elements—including a waterfall cascading down a natural stone formation. Today, swimming pool builders offer much more than a choice of either a rectangular or round shape. Not only are there vast options when designing an outdoor recreational area, there are new maintenance and safety options that allow homeowners to create a safer, easy-to-care-for addition to their home.

A swimming pool is an investment, so there should be some basic decisions considered before the construction starts. To help with those decisions, we’ve created a starter list of 5 ways to build the perfect pool.

Vinyl Liner or Gunite Pool

Longevity and cost separate these 2 types of swimming pool constructions.

Vinyl liner swimming pools cost less to install, and generally last around 10 years before requiring replacement. Vinyl pools take less time to build than the gunite pools, and offer unlimited options in shape and size.

Gunite swimming pools are highly durable, and can be created in any shape desired. Gunite is a mixture of sand and cement poured over a rebar wire frame. If the pool is properly maintained, they will last at least 15 years before a resurfacing is required.

Light It Up

Lights increase the ambience of the pool area. There are a variety of ways to light up a swimming pool for nighttime swimming and entertaining, with many choices available on the market.

LED lights emit no heat, allow optional colors, and offer an array of light show settings. These adaptable lights are available in floating light or underwater styles. Another great feature of LED lights is that they last about 30,000 hours before replacement is needed and they are energy efficient.

Though not as popular today, fiber optic lights are available as an option for pool lighting. While they offer a variety of color exhibitions and are easy to replace, initially they are more expensive and are the least bright option for lighting a swimming pool. Fiber optic lights often require a fan to cool them down.

Add Natural Elements

Creating a beautiful outdoor space often incorporates natural elements like stone grottoes, waterfalls, lazy rivers, and lush landscaping. Instead of adding steps or a ladder to enter the pool, consider a gently sloped walk-in entry.  And for additional aesthetics, add fountains or bubblers, or a fire pit.

Consider the Fun Factor

Swimming pools can be a source for retreat and family fun at the same time. Slides are available in varying heights, shapes, and colors. For the adults, how about adding a swim-up bar and a hot tub? Also, outdoor kitchens can turn the pool area into a complete and functional outdoor living space for weekend get-togethers.

Experience Pays Off
